SARA: (playfully) Hello Gilbert.

Sara is in the backseat of Natalie's (the MCSK) car, bound.
SARA: (...) I do know what it's like to be alone. Afraid that nobody's ever gonna be there for you.
NATALIE: Ernie was.
SARA: Yes he was. That's true Natalie. I lost my father too... I know that Ernie loved you. He would not have wanted you to do this.
NATALIE: Ernie loved me more than Grissom could ever love you.
SARA: Grissom? I know what this is about. (...)

GRISSOM: (shouting to the helicopter medivac) Move over, I'm going with her!
Gil boards the helicopter and it takes off. Weakly, Sara awakens. The first thing she sees is Grissom's name tag... The camera pans up.

ECKLIE: OK then, um, this is an administrative inquiry. You and your supervisor were in direct violation of lab policy.
SARA: (Quickly) Are.
ECKLIE: Are in direct violation of lab policy, which states that members of the same forensic team may not engage in a romantic relationship. So when did you and supervisor Grissom begin your relationship?
SARA: We've always had a relationship.
ECKLIE: ...I mean... When did you become intimate?
SARA: (Thinks about it for a moment) Two years ago. I think it was a Sunday.

Conrad Ecklie angrily strolls into Grissom's office, where he is seated at his desk.
ECKLIE: You been dodging me, it's time to talk. Gil, nobody wants to hear about your love life less than I do but since you didn't handle this right, I have to take a formal statement. Should have been a conversation between friends, I mean we could have found some way around this. Catherine could've done Sara's evaluations - why didn't you just tell me?
GRISSOM: We didn't want you to know.
ECKLIE: Don't most women like the world to know they're dating someone?
GRISSOM: Where do you get your information about women, Conrad?
ECKLIE: (Shaking his head, sighing) Ok, So. When did you two... You know.
GRISSOM: (Thinks) ...Nine years ago.
ECKLIE: You know what, you two need to get your stories straight.

Gil and Sara are sitting in a car in a parking lot.
GRISSOM: When did you tell Ecklie we got involved?
SARA: Two years ago. (As she sees the look on Grissom's face) Why? What did you tell him?
GRISSOM: Nine years ago.

SARA: (Laughing out loud) The Forensic Academy conference?
GRISSOM: Yeah. (Sara is still laughing in the foreground) ... You, uh, had to many questions about anthropology for some reason.
SARA: Well, I was stalling. I was trying to get the nerve to ask you to dinner.
GRISSOM: You had a ponytail.
SARA: (Her smile fades and she turns away) I'm gonna move to 'swing'.
GRISSOM: We talked about this.
SARA: I know that you said that you would do it, but I don't want to do that to the team. Besides, I am sure that I could use some more daylight in my life.
As their conversation has turned melancholy; their smiles fade.

Later, at the Go-Kart track, the gang (except Gil and Sara) are all racing. Nick stops by them and asks if they would like to join in.
SARA: (encouragingly) You should go!
GRISSOM: (looking to see if he has her approval) Yeah?
SARA: Yeah, you should go.

Gil speeds off... Leaving Sara alone to think (occasionally throwing him loving glances, of course.)

GRISSOM: Oh I love it when you dress up.
SARA:(Laughs) Well, you know, whatever it takes to get some time with you. How's the study going, any sign of colony collapse disorder?
GRISSOM: Nope, so far it's healthy.
SARA: (Clears throat, smiling) Nothing too healthy about smoking.
GRISSOM: Well, the scent confuses the guard bees. They won't emit the pheromone that tells the colony there's an intruder.
SARA: [To the bees] Don't worry, he's harmless.

SARA: Who's who?
GRISSOM: These are the workers. Infertile females.
SARA: They don't sting?
GRISSOM: Well not unless you swat one, close one up in your hand or freak out... Go ahead, take off your glove.
SARA: Hm, all right. I trust you.
GRISSOM: See.
SARA: That's cool.
GRISSOM: The worker bees defend the hive, procure the pollen, make the honey, nuture the larva and pupa in each of these brood cells.
GRISSOM: You know maybe we should get married.

SARA: Ouch!
GRISSOM: Sorry!
He picks up the smoke can and sprays the area. She is laughing at being stung.
GRISSOM: Don't pick it out. Makes it worse. Releases the venom into the blood stream. It's better to scrape it.
He attentively scrapes her sting with a small knife. She is looking at him, as if realising something.
GRISSOM: So, uh... What do you think. You know abou-
SARA: Yes.

SARA: Let's do it. (Laughs)

He goes in to kiss her! They both tilt their heads and lean toward each other, only to be stopped by their bee net masks.

Sara is walking through the laboratory, Hodges comes out of his lab to meet her.
HODGES: Hey Sara. You look like you're having a good day.
SARA: Thanks.

Grissom is in his office. He is leaning his head on his hand, his eyes are closed, and he is smiling.
CATHERINE: Hey!
He jerks upright from his daydream.
CATHERINE: What are you up to?
GRISSOM: Nothing.

8X07 - Goodbye and Good Luck

Sara comes out of the interrogation room where she has just lost her temper with Hannah (a young suspect from an earlier episode with whom she had a 'connection'). Grissom walks out of the observation room towards her.

SARA: (angrily) What are you doing here?
GRISSOM: I was gonna ask you the same question. Listen, I'm worried about-
SARA: (walking backwards) That just makes this worse. I can't talk about this right now. I can't.

Grissom's in the middle of talking to Hodges, when Sara walks up to him...

Gil searches the lab for Sara. The receptionist tells him she has already left, but left a letter for him. He goes back to his office to read it. It says:
Gil,
You know I love you. I feel I have loved you forever. Lately, I haven't been feeling very well. Truth be told, I'm tired. Out in the desert under that car that night, I realised something and I haven't been able to shake it. Since my father died, I've spent almost my entire life with ghosts. We've been like close friends and out there in the desert it occurred to me that it was time for me to bury them. I can't do that here. I'm so sorry. No matter how hard I try to fight it off, I'm left with the feeling that I have to go. I have no idea where I'm going, but I know I have to do this. If I don't I'm afraid I'll self-destruct and worse, you'll be there to see it happen.

Be safe. Know that I tried very hard to stay. Know that you are my one-and-only. I will miss you with every beat of my heart. Our life together was the only home I've ever really had. I wouldn't trade it for anything. I love you, I always will.

Goodbye.
